Salman’s Early Life, Before Entering the World of Bollywood:
Salman Khan was born in a family that was heavily attached to Bollywood. His father Salim Khan was a well known screen writer, with movies like Deewar, Don, Sholay and many more, to his credit. His mother was Salma Khan (birth name, Sushila Charak). His paternal roots trace back to Afghanistan. His grandfather had shifted to India and settled in the state of Madhya Pradesh. However, the actor’s mother was a Marathi Hindu. Later, his father remarried the famous Helen Richardson. Salman had studied in St. Stanislaus High School in the Bandra area of Mumbai, just like his younger siblings Arbaaz, as well as Sohail. The actor also spent a few years of his student life in The Scindia School in Gwalior.
The Start of Salman’s Career (1980s):
The actor made his debut in Bollywood with the film ‘Biwi Ho to Aisi’ in 1988. It should be mentioned here that Salman had only bagged a supporting role in the mentioned film. His first movie as lead actor was ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, directed by Sooraj R. Bajratya, which released in the year 1989. This film was not only a huge hit, but it also got Salman the ‘Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut’.
The important part about the beginning of this star’s career is that, in spite of coming from a family that was already respected and well known in Bollywood, thanks to his father Salim Khan; Salman never tried to use that fact. He auditioned for films like any other new comer. So, the one thing that we have to admit about Salman is that he is truly a self-made man.
The 1990s:
The first film delivered by Salman in the1990s was ‘Baaghi: A Rebel for Love’ in the year 1990 itself. The film was again a hit. Next came a string of four hit films in the year 1991. They were ‘Saajan’, ‘Kurbaan’, Patthar Ke Phool’, and ‘Bewafa’. Followed by these, all the films that the actor did in 1992 and 1993 did not strike a chord with the audience. However, there is no need to think that these failures slowed the actor down in anyway. Next, in the year 1994, came Salman’s second venture with Sooraj Bajratya as his director; the film ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ with Madhuri Dixit as his leading lady. This film not only broke the chain of flops but became the fourth highest grossing film in Bollywood, ever.
The next significant film in his career came the next year itself. The film ‘Karan Arjun’ in which he was paired with Shah Rukh Khan was directed by Rakesh Roshan. This film got him a nomination for the Best Actor award, which however was finally won by his co-star for the film ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’. Some of the other significant films that the actor delivered in this decade are : ‘Khamoshi: The Musical’, ‘Jeet’,’ Judwaa ‘,’Auzaar’, ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya ‘,’Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Ha’. Most of these were rather successful films except the first one. However, the actor’s capabilities were appreciated in that one too. The film, ‘Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya’, with Kajol, was again a record hit that year. The actor ended the decade with an important and long cameo in the extremely successful Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’.
The last year of the decade, i.e. 1999, saw the actor in three films, ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United’, ‘Biwi No.1’ and the blockbuster ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’. This film got Salman a Best Actor Nomination in the respected Filmfare Awards.
From 2000 to 2009:
Among the two films that he did in the year 2000, ‘Chori Chori Chupke Chupke’ projected him as a more serious actor. The other release was ‘Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega’. The next landmark film n the actor’s extraordinary career was ‘Tere Naam’ in 2003. His performance in the film received praise from every name in Bollywood and it opened new doors for Salman himself. The next set of films that the actor did, were mainly comedies like ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ and ‘No Entry’. His two releases in 2006 were ‘Jaan-E-Mann’ and ‘Baabul’ which were not so successful as compared to his previous two films.
The next films that he did were ‘Salaam E Ishq’ and the extremely successful, ‘Partner’. It has to be mentioned here that Salman was the first Bollywood actor to work in Hollywood. The name of the film was ‘Marigold: An Adventure in India’. After this, his films in 2008 did not do anything for the actor or his career.
Surprisingly, it was the TV show ‘Dus Ka Dum’ that again thrust him into the limelight. The success of this show was followed by the success of his film ‘Wanted’, with Ayesha Takia. Next were the films ‘London Dreams’ and ‘Main Aur Mrs.Khanna’.
2010 to Present Time:
Barring the one unsuccessful ‘Veer’ with newcomer ‘Zarine Khan’, these two years have been extra ordinary for the actor. His films ‘Dabangg’, ‘Ready’ and ‘Bodyguard’ each surpassed the other in Box-Office collections. Not only this, ‘Dabangg’managed to earn the actor Best Actor Award from a number of reputed institutions like Star Screen, Stardust and Filmfare.
Upcoming Projects:
The upcoming films of the actor include the much hyped ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ opposite his long-time partner and now, ex, Katrina Kaif.

He had once even been accused of having links with the underworld, on the basis of a recorded tape. However, the charge was lifted as the tape was later declared to be fake. But now we know why Salman is frequently called the ‘Bad Boy’ of the Indian Film Industry.
Relationships:
The most significant of all his relationships were the ones with Aishwarya Rai (Bachchan) and Katrina Kaif. The former had accused Salman of stalking after they broke up and physical abuse during the relationship. She had later stated that she will never be seen in a film with him due to certain personal issues.
His relationship with Katrina too had lasted for a long time, often encouraging talks about their marriage. However the actress had declared in 2011 that this relationship was formally over since 2010. For now, Salman is known to be living single.
Others:
Salman is known to be a lion-hearted man, in spite of all the negative things that he has been accused of. He is frequently known to visit sick people, especially children, purely out of his concern for them. Salman even donates blood regularly. He is associated with an NGO called ‘Being Human’, which collects money for the children by selling T shirts. The NGO owes a lot to the actor for dedicatedly supporting and contributing to their noble cause. Surely, one will agree that he cannot be all bad if he does so much for the needy. The actor is also famous for lending a hand in building the careers of strugglers and newcomers in Bollywood. Many will swear that he is the nicest human being, in spite of his knack of digging up trouble.
